A Friendly Dive into The Bachelorette Party by Camilla Sten
When I first stumbled upon The Bachelorette Party by Camilla Sten, I was instantly intrigued. The promise of a remote Swedish island, a mysterious disappearance, and the tantalizing backdrop of a bachelorette retreat had me hooked from the get-go. With Sten’s knack for crafting suspenseful narratives, I was eager to dive in—I imagined a thrilling, escapist read perfect for summer lounging. However, my journey through its pages turned out to be more complex than I anticipated.
The novel oscillates between two timelines, weaving the past and the present, focusing on four lifelong friends who share an annual secret getaway. This year, however, the carefree tradition takes a dark turn when their past shadows encroach upon the present. Fast forward ten years, and we find Tessa Nilsson, a disgraced podcaster, determined to unravel a true crime mystery related to her friends’ disappearance. The island where Tessa attends her best friend’s bachelorette retreat eerily mirrors the one where her friends vanished, and the suspense begins to build.
Unfortunately, despite this promising setup, my experience with The Bachelorette Party was somewhat of a mixed bag. The pacing felt choppy, making it difficult for me to fully immerse myself in the narrative. Tessa’s perspective was the most engaging—it offered a glimpse into a life haunted by unresolved mysteries—but even her storyline lost momentum at times, leaving me drifting along rather than being swept away.
One of the standout aspects for me was the podcast element in the narrative. I’ve always found the blending of media—like a fictional podcast within a book—to be an innovative storytelling device. Yet, in this case, it felt disjointed, and I struggled to connect with the transitions from Tessa’s present-day adventures to her retrospective explorations.
The vibe of this book is undeniably addictive on paper—its intriguing premise has all the makings of a pop-corn thriller. You could easily picture yourself plucking it off the shelf for a weekend getaway, yet I couldn’t shake the sense that the execution didn’t quite live up to the expectations. If only the storytelling had flowed more smoothly, I may have found myself fully engrossed.
Despite my disappointment, I want to emphasize that The Bachelorette Party might resonate with others in ways that it didn’t for me. Some readers crave puzzles and thrillers that are easy to digest—this fits comfortably into that category. If you’re a fan of fun, quick-paced mysteries to accompany your beach days, this could be a perfect pick.
All in all, I can’t help but feel that Sten’s writing has immense potential, and I will certainly keep an eye out for her future works. The Resting Place remains a favorite of mine, and I look forward to more explorations of her unique storytelling style. While I didn’t completely connect with The Bachelorette Party, I’m confident there are plenty of readers who will. Consider giving it a try; perhaps you’ll uncover the magic I missed.
