Book Review of Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds

Review of Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds by Allison Brennan

As summer approaches, I find myself increasingly drawn to books that whisk me away to sun-soaked beaches and scintillating mysteries. When I stumbled upon Beach Reads and Deadly Deeds, I felt an instant connection to its promise of romance intertwined with suspense. With the publication date conveniently aligning with my upcoming Colorado River ski trip, it seemed like the perfect literary companion for my own mini adventure. I’ve always admired Allison Brennan’s storytelling, and I was eager to see how she would blend contemporary romance with a gripping mystery. Spoiler alert: she did not disappoint!

At the heart of this story is Mia Crawford, a character who quickly won me over with her charm and determination. Unlike many protagonists, Mia feels refreshingly relatable. She’s not just on vacation at the exclusive St. Clare resort; she’s on a quest for self-discovery, hoping to have a fling while deciding the direction of her life. And what a ride that journey becomes! Mia’s encounter with the enigmatic Jason, a hot, adventure-loving bartender, sets the stage for both romantic escapades and a chilling mystery that soon unfolds—a missing guest followed by the shocking discovery of a body during a midnight swim. How could anyone resist such tantalizing scenarios?

One aspect of the narrative I particularly enjoyed was Brennan’s masterful use of first-person perspective. Although I typically shy away from contemporary romance told in this manner, Mia’s voice drew me in completely. Her witty observations and emotional depth made me eager to decipher the mysteries alongside her. That said, I did find myself yearning for Jason’s perspective; the allure of his character and how he navigates his own conflicts would have added layers to the story that I craved.

Mia’s accidental discovery of a tattered paperback book sets off a chain of events that kept me engrossed. The book, paired with the marginalia written by the mysteriously murdered Diana Harden, serves as a fascinating plot device that intertwines Mia’s search for love and answers. Each newly uncovered clue not only propels the mystery forward but also reveals Mia’s savvy curiosity and passion for mysteries—traits that resonate deeply with bibliophiles like myself. Brennan’s ability to weave multiple storylines—from romance to suspense—creates a dynamic reading experience that feels seamless and engaging.

The pacing of the novel mirrors a beach vacation—smoothly cruising the waters of intrigue while also allowing moments for deeper reflection. As Mia navigates her personal dilemmas and the darker affairs at the resort, the story kept me on my toes. The twist ending, while not wholly unforeseen, felt satisfying and wrapped up the threads perfectly, making for a delightful closing chapter.
