Book Review: Verity by Colleen Hoover
When I first picked up Verity by Colleen Hoover, I was hoping for a thrilling ride through psychological suspense. Instead, I found myself spiraling into a whirlwind of laughter, confusion, and disbelief. Seriously, who knew that a book about chilling manipulation could double as a comedy show? With its twisted plot and absurd character choices, this book has definitely etched a memorable space in my reading journey.
From the get-go, we meet our protagonist, who inexplicably takes her sweet time reading through Verity’s manuscript, agonizingly slowing down her pace like most people binge-watch Netflix. I mean, 19 chapters should not take weeks to digest! My eyes were rolling so hard I could hear them. Did she really need to analyze every detail? I just wish the heroine had the courage to cut through the tension and get to the juicy stuff—perhaps even a few less hours of mooning over Jeremy would’ve helped. Spoiler alert: if you find yourself getting attached to her, prepare for disappointment; I couldn’t even remember her name halfway through!
And speaking of names, it’s kind of funny how the villain—or, let’s be real, the most interesting character—Verity, remained a stealthy warrior in the background. Whether she was pretending to be in a vegetative state or pulling ghostly shenanigans, I couldn’t help but cheer for her chaotic brilliance while shaking my head at our heroine’s overwhelming nosiness. You’d think being married to a supposed genius would come with some intrigue, yet our leading lady ended up feeling more like a comical sidekick trying to salvage a sinking ship.
The humor in this horror was such an unexpected twist! Each time the heroine’s anxiety peaked at Verity’s outlandish behavior, it felt so outrageously exaggerated that I chuckled instead of cringe. I mean, Verity running around like a Casper ghost? Perfect material for a dark comedy stage. Oh, the missed opportunities for pure chaos that could have left Loren in a deep spiral of existential dread—I was nearly rooting for Verity to scare her out of her skin.
However, not all of the humor came from the spooky antics. The romantic pieces? A different story. I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed by the chemistry between Jeremy and Loren. Their interactions left me feeling as if I’d been served stale bread. Honestly, every intimate moment felt like two pieces of wood trying to make fire—good luck with that!
In the end, as I turned the last pages, I couldn’t help but be grateful for the comic relief that Verity provided amidst the supposed suspense. Although the twists and pacing felt uneven at times, Hoover managed to craft a story that will resonate with readers seeking a mix of chills and chuckles. If you enjoy a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously and serves up some dark humor amidst the psychological chaos, then Verity might just be the book of the month for you!
So go ahead and pick it up; just be ready to giggle at the absurdity of it all!
